Roy Jones Jr. is an eroded boxing legend

Claiming to “still got it,” shopworn boxing icon Roy Jones Jr. will throw fists with Courtney Fry on Saturday night at the Kipsala Exhibition Centre in Riga, Latvia. Jones (57-8, 40 KOs) last vacated the ring on December 21 after earning a unanimous decision over Frenchman Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf. Comparatively, the 39-year-old (18-5, 6 KOs) Fry has lost two consecutive bouts since defeating journeyman Matty Clarkson in October 2012. “I know he’ll give it all he got, which is what I want from any opponent,” said Jones, 45, who was planning to run for mayor this autumn in Pensacola, Florida. … Continue reading

Buffalo Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel will struggle as a sophomore

According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, Buffalo Bills signal-caller E.J. Manuel needlessly gained muscle and now tips the scales at 247 pounds. The 24-year-old Manuel, who trained with Colin Kaepernick this offseason and participated in all of Buffalo’s organized team activities in the springtime, underwent three knee operations as a rookie. Hence, the 6-foot-5 Manuel will require the support of a brace this autumn and likely lack some mobility. After getting selected 16th overall out of Florida State, Manuel threw 11 touchdowns, against nine interceptions, for 1,972 yards in 10 games. Even with a bummed joint, Manuel added 186 yards and … Continue reading

Charlotte Hornets power forward Cody Zeller should have never left Bloomington

Charlotte Hornets associate head coach Patrick Ewing wants gangly power forward Cody Zeller to expand his offensive repertoire and become a better defender this offseason. The 21-year-old Zeller, who was taken fourth overall out of Indiana, badly disappointed as a rookie. A former Hoosiers center, the 7-foot, 240-pound Zeller only averaged 6.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists over 82 games. “We need for [Zeller] to do it on both ends, not just look to score,” said Ewing, 51, a three-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. Zeller was exposed when Syracuse battered Indiana in March 2013 and he … Continue reading

Argentinean great Sergio Martinez will wrongly continue to box

Sergio Martinez will not retire from prizefighting and he expects to regain a crown in the near future. In an extraordinarily dominant performance, Miguel Cotto stopped the 39-year-old Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) six seconds into the 10th round to capture the WBC middleweight championship on June 7 at Madison Square Garden. Meeting at a maximum weight of 159 pounds, the 5-foot-7 Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs) sacrificed size, speed and power against the 5-foot-10 Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs). Nevertheless, the 33-year-old Cotto floored Martinez three times in the first and once more in the ninth and was ahead 90-77 on all … Continue reading
