Carl Froch and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. are destined to fight

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum told RingTV.com that Carl Froch and former WBC middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. may clash on January 24 at the MGM in Las Vegas. “I don’t want to say anything more about anything until we get it done,” said Arum, 82, whose contract with Chavez is valid until October 2015. The 37-year-old Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) knocked George Groves onto Queer Street in the eighth round on May 31 to successfully defend the IBF and WBA super middleweight crowns. Groves (19-2, 15 KOs), whose awkward style again gave the Nottingham native fits, consistently outdid … Continue reading

Shannon Briggs tries to start a brawl with Wladimir Klitschko

Former two-time heavyweight titlist Shannon Briggs interrupted Wladimir Klitschko’s open media workout and tried to instigate a brawl with the boxing legend on Tuesday in South Florida. Michael Moorer separated the 42-year-old Briggs (55-6-1-1, 48 KOs) and the 38-year-old Klitschko (62-3, 53 KOs) before fists were thrown. Briggs last vacated the squared circle on June 28 after universally outscoring Brazilian Raphael Zumbano Love to capture the vacant NABA heavyweight strap. A native Brooklynite, Briggs floored Love (34-8-1, 27 KOs) in the opening and final rounds. Nicknamed “The Cannon,” Briggs has won four consecutive bouts since getting gruesomely defaced by Vitali … Continue reading

Eroded boxing icon Roy Jones Jr. batters journeyman Courtney Fry

Roy Jones Jr. scored a fifth round TKO over British contender Courtney Fry on Saturday at the Kipsala Exhibition Centre in Riga, Latvia. While the 39-year-old (18-6, 6 KOs) Fry seemed reluctant to throw fists, Jones (58-8, 41 KOs) used solid head movement and landed punches from multiple angles to fluster the outclassed Englishman. Jones ultimately floored Fry with a left hook in the fifth round. Although Fry regained his footing, the bout was stopped and Jones was declared the victor. “I’d like to thank Courtney Fry for putting up a gallant effort,” said Jones, 45, a wannabe mayoral candidate … Continue reading

Gennady Golovkin would brutalize Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden

Russian badass Gennady Golovkin scored a third round TKO victory over Australian Daniel Geale to successfully defend the WBA and IBO middleweight belts Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) floored the 33-year-old Geale (30-3, 16 KOs) in the second and then continued to mercilessly stalk the bleeding Aussie. Sensing a beaten man, Golovkin exchanged punches with Geale in the third and landed a savage right hand that again sent the former two-time middleweight champion to the canvas. Although Geale managed to regain his footing, referee Michael Ortega compassionately halted the bout at 2 minutes and 43 … Continue reading

Rather than mentioning Gennady Golovkin, Andre Ward should finally fight

During a recent interview with Boxing Scene, Andre Ward ridiculously asserted that Gennady Golovkin is afraid to throw fists. Golovkin (29-0, 26 KOs) will defend the WBA and IBO middleweight belts against Australian Daniel Geale on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. In stark contrast to GGG, the 30-year-old Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) has become a glorified spectator who is strictly determined to trash his agreement with Dan Goossen. “It’s a little different situation,” said Golovkin, 32, who took an extended break following the death of his father on February 18. “My story is my story and Andre’s story is … Continue reading
