Tavon Austin ‘didn’t really know what was going on’ as a St. Louis Ram

Tavon Austin said Wednesday that the St. Louis Rams’ playbook “looked like Spanish” last year. Austin, who St. Louis selected eighth overall out of West Virginia, caught 40 balls for 418 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie. A two-time First-Team All-American, Austin also rushed nine times for 151 yards and a score. “I didn’t really know what was going on,” said Austin, 23, who recorded a 7 on his 2013 Wonderlic test. “Everything looked like Spanish and sounded like Spanish to me.” Austin, who can complete the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds, should be a nightmare to defend. However, … Continue reading

Matt Cassel is the ‘heavy favorite’ to start over Teddy Bridgewater for the Minnesota Vikings

According to USA Today’s Tom Pelissero, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel is the “heavy favorite” to start over rookie Teddy Bridgewater in Week 1. Working in the same role as a Brown in 2013, new Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner wanted Cleveland to acquire the 32-year-old Cassel last season. A criminally underrated signal-caller, Cassel pushes the ball vertically and Turner believes the dismissed Trojan will flourish in his system. Cassel has tossed 93 scores, versus 66 picks, for 15,302 yards since debuting with the New England Patriots in 2005. Still, although the 2010 Pro Bowler is a very solid ballplayer, … Continue reading

Buffalo Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel will struggle as a sophomore

According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, Buffalo Bills signal-caller E.J. Manuel needlessly gained muscle and now tips the scales at 247 pounds. The 24-year-old Manuel, who trained with Colin Kaepernick this offseason and participated in all of Buffalo’s organized team activities in the springtime, underwent three knee operations as a rookie. Hence, the 6-foot-5 Manuel will require the support of a brace this autumn and likely lack some mobility. After getting selected 16th overall out of Florida State, Manuel threw 11 touchdowns, against nine interceptions, for 1,972 yards in 10 games. Even with a bummed joint, Manuel added 186 yards and … Continue reading

Brittle New England Patriots star Rob Gronkowski is ‘planning on playing the whole season this year’

According to ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss, fragile New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski expects to start Week 1 when the team travels to Miami Gardens to play the Dolphins on September 7. The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Gronkowski, who penned a six-year extension worth $54 million in June 2012, suffered a concussion, and a torn right ACL and MCL on December 8 versus Cleveland. Gronkowski, who also required back surgery in June 2013 to alleviate pain caused by a degenerative disc disease and didn’t debut until October against the Jets in the swamps of Jersey, underwent the knife on January 9. “I’m planning on … Continue reading

Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer is ‘excited’ to battle Johnny Manziel in Cleveland

Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer “can’t wait for” training camp to commence next week. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Hoyer suffered a torn ACL versus the Buffalo Bills on October 3 and underwent the knife to repair the wound roughly two weeks later. “Obviously we’re going to see how the knee’s feeling, but I’m geared up and ready to go and excited,” said Hoyer, 28, who expects to practice without limitation. “I can’t wait for next Saturday.” Hoyer will battle electric rookie Johnny Manziel to start under center on September 7 against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Undrafted out of Michigan State, Hoyer … Continue reading
