Training with Edgerrin James, Indianapolis Colts runner Trent Richardson looks ‘great’ at camp

Overlooking his uninspiring showing in the Colts’ exhibition opener, the Indianapolis Star’s Stephen Holder says Trent Richardson is “off to a great start” at training camp. The 22-year-old Richardson, who is roughly seven months removed from shoulder surgery, struggled mightily after relocating to Indianapolis last September and needs to finally earn his $2.25 million salary. Splitting time with Donald Brown, Richardson rushed 157 times for only 458 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games as a Colt. Able to complete the 40-yard dash in 4.32 seconds, the 2011 All-American also disappointed by catching 28 measly pigskins for 265 yards. Most … Continue reading

Michael Floyd will be ‘big’ and fly as an Arizona Cardinal

NFL writer Dan Pompei predicts that Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Floyd is “in for a big year.” The 24-year-old Floyd, who flourished in Bruce Arians’ vertical passing offense, snagged 65 pigskins for 1,041 yards and five touchdowns as a sophomore Cardinal. Overall, since being taken out of Notre Dame with the 13th pick in 2012, the former Irishman has amassed 110 receptions for 1,603 yards and seven scores. Establishing numerous school records in South Bend, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Floyd is a tough and physically imposing athlete who understands the game and thrives on third downs. Floyd, who is blessed … Continue reading

Cleveland Browns rookie Johnny Manziel is ‘now ahead’ of veteran Brian Hoyer

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel outplayed Brian Hoyer in Saturday’s 12-13 loss against the Lions in Detroit. The 28-year-old Hoyer, who suffered a torn ACL versus the Buffalo Bills on October 3 and underwent the knife to repair the wound roughly two weeks later, completed 6-of-14 passes for 92 yards. Undrafted out of Michigan State, Hoyer’s wildly inconsistent, lacks accuracy and arm strength, and is nothing more than an efficient overseer. Comparatively, chosen 22nd overall by Cleveland in May, the 21-year-old Manziel went 7-of-11 for 63 yards. Displaying remarkable maneuverability and quickness, Manziel added six carries for 27 yards. A … Continue reading

Robert Griffin III, and not Kirk Cousins, is the Washington Redskins’ ‘best quarterback’

While watching the New England Patriots and Washington Redskins practice last week, ESPN Boston’s Mike Reiss concluded Robert Griffin III “didn’t look like the best quarterback on his own team.” Reiss claims that backup Kirk Cousins “was better” at operating Jay Gruden’s West Coast offense than the 24-year-old Griffin. Oddly, in stark contrast to the observations of Reiss, the majority of onlookers have said that RG3 has regained his explosiveness and is ready to reemerge as a superstar. Griffin, who clearly never recovered from reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL and LCL ligaments in his right knee, didn’t resemble the … Continue reading

Jay Cutler has three seasons to lead the Chicago Bears to a Super Bowl

Quarterback Jay Cutler looked sharp in the Bears’ 34-28 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night at Soldier Field in Chicago. Highlighted by a spectacular toss to TE Zach Miller in the back of the end zone, the 31-year-old Cutler completed 9-of-13 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Rather than walking as a free agent last spring, Cutler and the Bears agreed to a seven-year deal worth $126 million on January 2. With Cutler as their signal-caller, Chicago hasn’t qualified for the playoffs since 2010. In the final season of a contract valued at $49.7 million, Cutler played … Continue reading
