Chargers fans should be concerned that Ryan Mathews is ‘the guy’ in San Diego

Ryan Mathews makes Clay Aiken seem like a badass.

Expecting the brittle running back to “have a great year” and be “the guy,” San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy gave a vote of confidence to Ryan Mathews on Tuesday.

Taken 11th overall out of Fresno State, San Diego’s suits banged the pooch and signed the 25-year-old Matthews to a five-year pact worth $26.65 million in August 2010.

Battling clavicle injuries throughout 2012, the 6-foot, 220 pound Mathews only started nine games and amassed a measly 678 yards on the ground.

Going 7-9 in the AFC West and having not qualified for the playoffs since 2009, San Diego managed to score a paltry 350 points last season.

Unfortunately for Chargers fans, Ryan Mathews is not the type of backfield presence that can enliven San Diego’s attack.

In actuality, one of the least fearsome rushers in the NFL is featured in “America’s Finest City.”
