Houston Texans free safety Ed Reed has 15 million reasons to play

Ed Reed knows he has an obligation to compete.

Although “nicked up” and not “near where he wants to be physically,” Texans free safety Ed Reed will play Sunday when Houston hosts the St. Louis Rams at Reliant Stadium.

The 35-year-old Reed tweaked his MCL in last weekend’s loss to the 49ers in San Francisco.

Shortly after inking a three-year contract worth $15 million to become a Texan, Reed blindsided Houston and underwent minor hip surgery in March to repair a small labral tear.

Reed was signed by Houston general manager Rick Smith to replace Glover Quin in the secondary.

Although graying and gimpy, a healthy Reed will bolster Houston’s defense and improve the squad’s overall psyche.

An eight-time All-Pro selection who was voted a member of the 2000s NFL All-Decade Team, Reed has only recorded eight tackles and taken 136 snaps in three games.

Still, even when hobbled, the former Hurricane remains an inspirational leader who covers a lot of ground.

Houston has lost three consecutive contests and quarterback Matt Schaub is directing the league’s 26th ranked attack.

Until Schaub returns to form, the Texans must be especially stingy on defense.

“Nicked up” or “where he wants to be physically,” Ed Reed has 15 million reasons to help the Texans stifle the Rams in “Space City.”
