Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez spoke to the media Tuesday at a press conference held at Chase Square in Madison Square Garden.
Martinez has been shelved since physically deteriorating last April against formidable Englishman Martin Murray.
Martinez, who controversially outscored the 31-year-old Murray (25-1-1, 11 KOs) by three counts of 115-112, suffered another right knee injury, broken left hand, and bad cut over his left eye during the scrap.
“It’s good that he thinks I’m injured and that he can take my world title because he watched a fight where I was vulnerable,” said Martinez, 39, who also dabbled professionally as a cyclist and soccer player and only began boxing at the advanced age of 20. “The way I see it, I was able to defend my title against a tough challenger with a busted knee, a shattered shoulder and with a hand that I fractured in round two. What is not good for him is that on June 7th I will be in perfect shape.”
Comparatively, in an utterly masterful showing, Cotto earned a third round TKO victory over Delvin Rodríguez on October 5 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.
A four-time world titlist in three weight divisions, Cotto’s training with Freddie Roach and the duo focused on throwing more left hooks to the body versus the 33-year-old Rodríguez (28-7-3, 16 KOs).
Accordingly, the Puerto Rican icon landed 29 of his 55 blows to Rodriguez’s torso and dominated.
“I’m just looking forward to starting my camp, looking forward to train as hard as I can each day, and being here on June 7th to become the first Puerto Rican to be a champion in four different divisions,” said Cotto, 33, a fearless aggressor. “At the end of the road, the winners are going to be the fans.”
Ultimately, despite manhandling Rodriguez, Cotto’s a bit shopworn and Martinez is graying and no longer the dominant force that won the 2010 “Fighter of the Year” award.
Still, there is no question that “the winners are going to be the fans.”
“At the end of the road,” as a blazing southpaw with a noticeable size advantage, expect Sergio Martinez to trump Miguel Cotto by a late stoppage this spring in Gotham.
