Mike Tyson’s Honest Opinion of Conor McGregor: A Look at Personality vs. Fighting Ability

Mike Tyson is one of the most iconic boxers in the history of the sport, and his opinion on other fighters is highly valued. In recent years, Conor McGregor has risen to prominence as one of the biggest names in mixed martial arts, and Tyson recently revealed his honest opinion of the Irishman.

During an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani in 2021, Tyson was asked about McGregor and whether he believed the former UFC champion was good for the sport. Tyson had some praise for McGregor, but also offered some criticism.

“He’s very charismatic, he’s very entertaining,” Tyson said. “He’s very good for the sport. But, his personality, it’s a little too abrasive for me.”

Tyson went on to explain that McGregor’s trash talk and over-the-top behavior was a turn-off for him personally, but he acknowledged that it was effective in generating interest and hype for fights.

“I think he’s a wonderful fighter, he’s a great fighter,” Tyson said. “But his personality, it’s not my cup of tea.”

Despite his criticism, Tyson did express admiration for McGregor’s fighting ability, and even predicted that the Irishman would win his rematch against Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 (which ultimately ended in a TKO victory for Poirier).

“He’s a great fighter, he’s a great fighter,” Tyson said. “I think he’ll win the rematch. I think he’ll beat Dustin Poirier. He’s just a good fighter.”

In conclusion, while Mike Tyson may not be a huge fan of Conor McGregor’s personality, he does acknowledge the Irishman’s skills as a fighter and recognizes his impact on the sport. Tyson’s honest opinion shows that even legends of combat sports can have differing views on fighters, and that personality and behavior can play a role in how a fighter is perceived by others.
