NBA G League’s Mexico City franchise to play first season in United States amid coronavirus restrictions

In 2019, the NBA and the G-League announced that the latter would be expanding to Mexico City.

The group, Capitanes, will be the 29th G-League program and the first based outside of the United States or Canada, and is scheduled to start its first period of play when the G-League season starts off in the fall.

Notwithstanding, the group will not play its debut season in Mexico as recently arranged.

Due to concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Capitanes will play their games in the United States in existing league markets, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein

The Capitanes will be a member of the G-League for at least the next five years and when play returns to Mexico, will play their home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City.
