In 2019, the NBA and the G-League announced that the latter would be expanding to Mexico City.
The group, Capitanes, will be the 29th G-League program and the first based outside of the United States or Canada, and is scheduled to start its first period of play when the G-League season starts off in the fall.
Notwithstanding, the group will not play its debut season in Mexico as recently arranged.

Due to concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Capitanes will play their games in the United States in existing league markets, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein
The G League's Mexico City Capitanes will be based in Fort Worth for practice and housing purposes for the 2021-22 season and will play all games in their inaugural @nbagleague season in existing league markets, league sources say.

The Capitanes will be a member of the G-League for at least the next five years and when play returns to Mexico, will play their home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City.
