History

The Boston Marathon has a rich history. It was started at the end of the 19th century; the first run was held on 19 April 1897.

The first United States Olympic team manager John Graham and the Boston Athletic Association members pioneered the Boston Marathon in 1897 after being inspired by the Athens Olympic Games in 1896.

The length of the first Marathon was 24.5 miles, in which only 15 runners participated. Only 10 runners could finish the race. John J. McDermott from New York won the very first Boston Marathon. In 1908, the length of the marathon was changed to 26.2 miles to maintain the Olympic standard.

Women were not allowed to participate in the Boston Marathon, though Roberta Bobbi Gibb sneaked in and completed the run in 1966. Kathrine Switzer did the same in the following year. In 1972, it was made official to allow women for the Boston Marathon. The 126th Boston Marathon 2022 will be the 50th Anniversary of women’s participation in this event.

In 1975, the wheelchair division was included in the Boston Marathon, making it the first major Marathon event in the world having the wheelchair event.

Unfortunately, the Boston Marathon suffered a terrorist bombing in 2013 that caused three deaths and more than 260 people injured. To mark the memory of the day, the Boston people organized One Boston Day, in which the city people encouraged each other to do voluntary work and participate in acts of kindness.

Since 1969, when the Patriot’s Day was moved to the third Monday of April, the Boston Marathon has been organized on the Patriot’s Day, with only one exception in 2021 due to the Covid pandemic. 2022 marks the 126th season of this historic marathon running.

How Many Runners Will Participate?

About 30,000 runners across the globe will participate in the 126th Boston Marathon. This huge number of runners have registered for the race because there was no sharp cutoff time for qualification this year.

Last season’s men’s champion Benson Kipruto will participate again this year, hoping to defend his honor. Among the celebrities, Leslie Osbourne, Heather O’Reilly, and Kristine Lilly from the women’s soccer team of the United States will join the marathon.
